Join Gov. Perdue on a Historic Trip to China to Open Beijing Economic Development Office

On Wednesday, April 2, 2008, the State of Georgia will dedicate its newest international economic development office in the Chinese capital city of Beijing. Gov. Sonny Perdue will lead a delegation to China to take part in the ceremonies and he has invited Georgia business leaders to accompany him on this historic 4-day mission. The Beijing office becomes the tenth international commerce office operated by the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) in strategic locations around the globe.

But, China holds special significance for Georgia. Already the world's most populous country and its fourth largest economy, China has changed significantly since it adopted market-oriented reforms. Its economy is growing at an average rate of 10% annually, the highest growth rate in the world. In 2006, Georgia's exports to China totaled $1 billion, ranking it as the state's third largest export destination. In some key trade categories, Georgia is in the top tier of U.S. states in exports to China. Gov. Perdue believes this new commerce office will open new avenues of trade with China.

The Georgia delegation will depart Atlanta on April 1st on Delta Air Lines' inaugural flight to Shanghai, where the group will spend two days. The delegation then heads to Beijing where the dedication ceremonies will bring together top business, political, educational and civic leaders from China and Georgia. The ribbon cutting takes place in the morning, followed that evening by a gala celebration dinner, offering many opportunities during the day to meet with Chinese officials and business contacts.

Gov. Perdue stressed that Georgia companies of any size or type of industry are urged to take part in this trip. GDEcD staff members can provide information and assistance before the trip and will accompany the delegation in a supporting role. An essential part of GDEcD's mission is to work in conjunction with the private sector to create economic growth and sustain a business-friendly environment.

The deadline to register for the trip is February 8, 2008. Complete details, including costs, itinerary and accommodations, can be found in China Mission, April 2008.
