Fifth Annual 'Reception on the Rooftop' Biggest, Best Ever
If you were a member, prospective member or friend of the Georgia Chamber and you were anywhere near the historic district in beautiful Savannah on Tuesday night, October 30th, the place to be was at the Georgia Power Headquarters to meet, greet, take in the view and enjoy Southern hospitality as only the folks in Savannah can do it.
A Team Georgia Chamber campaign tradition, the reception is held each fall high atop the power company's building, which sits adjacent to the busy Savannah river. In fact, if anyone needs proof of the vitality of this city and region - or the immense importance of the Georgia Ports Authority - one visit to this campaign event will confirm it all.
But, the first goal of the reception is to thank existing members who live in the area and to introduce prospective members to the organization. Hosted by Georgia Power and the Georgia Power Coastal Region membership team, everything about the evening is first class. No one could leave after such a pleasant, star-filled evening, just feet away from some of the largest ships afloat as they glide down the river, without an appreciation of Georgia's business environment. And, at least for this one evening, of the importance of being a member of the Georgia Chamber.
The campaign wishes to thank Craig Barrs, Georgia Power District Manager; Swann Seiler, campaign team captain; and all the members of her team for hosting this memorable event.
The 'Reception on the Rooftop' was just one event in a busy week for the statewide new member campaign, which is nearing its home stretch. For the more than 500 volunteers who are working hard to make sure the state chamber hits its goal of raising $1.75 million, this event in Savannah reminds everyone that the Georgia Chamber truly is a statewide organization. Even though the state chamber has members in 156 of Georgia's 159 counties, there is a need to increase the number of members, which is currently about 4,000.
As week 18 drew to a close, five veteran volunteers found themselves taking the spotlight as Top Producers. The leader was Tommy Graham (Atlanta Gas Light), turning in an impressive $12,500. He was followed by Frank Boyd (Georgia Power), with $10,500. Rounding out the top five were: Meredith Melvin Weaver (Pacesetters Team), reporting $3,445; Grace Sollar (Dr. J. David Allen and Associates), with $1,295; and Ronald McGee (Georgia Power - Coastal Region), adding $1,200 to his total.
Even though campaign workers will have all of November and December to top off their campaign production, many will be gathering in Atlanta on Wednesday evening, November 14th, at the Renaissance Atlanta Hotel, for the annual Victory Celebration. This is also the time that individual volunteers will be recognized for their accomplishments over the long summer and fall. Many of these same top producers have already locked up spots on the trip roster for the annual post-campaign evaluation session, which takes place in Aruba in January 2008.
With the big Las Vegas trip behind them, they will venture out for one more outing before the end of the campaign, the popular day trip to New York City on December 12th. Like the Las Vegas long weekend, New York is sponsored by AirTran Airways.
According to Dr. David Allen, 2007 Chair of the Georgia Chamber, this may be the most critical moment in decades for the business community to be linked into the state legislature. "I have watched Georgia government and public policy for a lot of years and there has never been a time when more was at stake than in 2008. The three dominant issues will be water, transportation and taxes and whatever is decided by the General Assembly, business will feel the effects. Our obligation is to strive to do both what is best for the business community and what is best for our state. And, the stronger we are as an organization, the better job we will be able to do," Dr, Allen added.
